My friend Joe Wilkinson and I spent a good part of our morning shooting waterfowl and wetland video in North Central Iowa. Overall habitat conditions are excellent and every area we visited held ducks –mallards, wood ducks, even a few newly arrived pintails. But the highlight of the morning came in the form of buzzing, low level flocks of southbound blue-winged teal. Although we’re already well past the peak of this year’s blue-wing migration, there were still enough teal flying that it made slogging through the mud and thick vegetation well worth the effort. The first segment of Iowa’s 2013 Duck Season begins Saturday. Joe and I are fired up, and we hope you are too. Hope you all have a fun and safe weekend.
